Pie Contest Time!

It’s hard to believe but on Sunday May 6 UCLA and the Fowler Museum will once again host KCRW’s Pie Contest.  This year is our 9th.  We started nine years ago in the atrium of the Topanga Westfield Mall with 200 pies and 400 observers.  This year we have well over 400 pie entries (some of us think we may hit 500 pies) and the “observers” have turned into thousands of eaters.  Just do the math. 400 pies cut into 10 pieces each is 4,000 slices of pie.  Judging all that pie is a gargantuan task and we have a large and talented pool of judges ready.  Just some of the august panel are  Jonathan Gold, Phil Rosenthal, Sang Yoon, Sherry Yard and Dahlia Narvaez.  As we have for the past several years we’ll have a couple food trucks, a marketplace with more food and craft items and games for children and adults.

We’re most excited to extend the competition to children ages 4-10.  They’ll be judged separately.  April 29th is the last day to enter.  But even if you don’t enter please join us in front of Royce Hall to watch a baking demo, listen to KCRW DJ Anne Litt spin the soundtrack, eat pie and cheer on the winners.

NEED HELP?

I’m teaching a Pie Clinic on April 24 at Gourmandise School.  If you want to bring your pie we can diagnose any issues.  Or you can just come for the refresher.

Also if you want to hang out with me video style.  There’s always Craftsy.
